Fishing & Guides

Trout fishing on the Little Red begins at the Greers Ferry dam which was dedicated by President John F. Kennedy in 1963.  Fishing extends about thirty miles downstream from the dam along the Little Red River.  A healthy population of wild Brown Trout, which were introduced as fertilized eggs in 1975, are now self-sustaining and spawn each year between October and December.  The first over forty pound brown ever recorded holds the current world record for both ALL TACKLE and FOUR POUND LIND CLASS.  It was caught May 9, 1992, from the Little Red.   The river also contains Cutthroat Trout that were stocked as fingerlings a few years ago but has been difficult to tell if they are successfully spawning.  Eighteen inch Cutthroats have been landed, however.   The majority of the trout are Rainbows which are stocked periodically throughout the year as nine or twelve inch fish.  An occasional hold over Rainbow in the lunker range (four pounds or over) can be found.

Cleburne County has created a masterpiece that includes thousands of acres of unspoiled water, miles and miles of scenic shoreline, a world-famous trout stream and wooded hills laced with hiking trails, wildlife habitat and gorgeous golf courses whose architects have taken maximum advantage of the hills and lakeshore terrain.
